The UA Writing Center is free and available to all members of the UA community. Below is a quick guide to using our services:

All clients need to register to use our services. From here or our homepage, select “Make An Appointment” and then “Register for an account.” Our system is not integrated with MyBama; you should use your crimson email for your user ID and create a unique password.

Check your email to activate your Writing Center account.

If you are trying to register and getting an error that says “This activation link isn’t valid,” you may have accidentally clicked on it twice. In this case, try exiting, then logging in normally– you may already be activated.

You can now use the appointment system.

When logging into our appointment system, choose between the Lloyd Hall and Online schedules.

Click on an available day and time to secure an appointment. White squares are available slots, while blue squares and gray squares are unavailable.

Use the “tutor focus” drop-down menu to search for a tutor by specialization [optional]. You can also browse tutor bios to find someone whose experience fits your needs. You will receive email confirmation.

All distance learning sessions are done by appointment. Once you’ve made an account with us, logged in, and selected the online schedule, you can browse for available tutors, days, and times.

Once you have selected an appointment time, the system will prompt you to choose between Zoom and asynchronous (email-based– upload your paper and get feedback).

You do not need to be online during your scheduled asynchronous session. The tutor will review your paper and send feedback at the end of the hour.

To complete your Zoom appointment, log in to our system at the dedicated day/time, and look for the link that says “Start or Join Zoom Consultation.”

We are often fully booked during peak times, but you can normally get in by the next day if you have some flexibility.

Stop by Lloyd 322 or call us at (205) 348-5049 to ask about a drop-in session. Appointments often open up during the day as clients change or reschedule their meeting times.

If you join our waiting list (available via the appointment system), you’ll be notified if an appointment becomes available. Once you are notified, you must go online to book that slot. The waiting list is first-come, first-served.
