At the Writing Center, we believe that the best way to improve your writing is to talk about it. We aim to create a supportive community of writers, where you will feel that your ideas are valued and your voice matters. While we provide the writing expertise, you are the expert on content. We will encourage you to rethink and revise your work, with our help. We believe that with time and practice, in the words of Peter Elbow, “everyone can write.”
When you come to the Writing Center, you can expect to collaborate with a thoughtful reader in a friendly, low-stakes environment. You and your tutor will talk through your ideas and come up with strategies for improving your draft. You can bring your work in at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to drafting or revising for content or style– we’re here to help, at “every stage of the page!”
Writing Center consultations typically last between 30-50 minutes. The focus of the session is largely up to you. At the start of each session, your and your tutor will review the assignment and set goals for the consultation.
You can expect your consultant to ask lots of questions and draw out your ideas. The best sessions involve lots of talk between tutor and client. Your tutor might point to places where you can improve or ask questions about specific parts of the paper. He/she will try to allow some time for you to do hands-on work, such as creating an outline, revising a paragraph, or finding a new source. At the end of your session, you and your tutor will fill out a client report form that summarizes the session, so you can have a written record of your tutor’s advice.
